Book 1 in a YA clifi dystopian duology.
❄️
In the future the world is in constant winter, but under a vast dome called Snowglobe, the inhabitants are warm. Outside its walls, however, the people live in a frozen wasteland where citizens fight to get to their jobs at the power plant every day. In order to live in Snowglobe, you have to be an actor or director, which can give you fame and fortune, but your lives are broadcast 24/7 in a reality TV show setting. Chobahm is obsessed with all things TV and wants to become a director. Her favorite of all the actors is Goh Haeri, Snowglobe’s biggest star and she happens to look a lot like her. When the opportunity to take Haeri’s place is presented to Chobahm, she doesn’t say no, but entering this world so unfamiliar than her own is more dangerous than she thought.

This scifi novel was everything and I’m so bummed I put off reading it for so long! Science fiction can be hit or miss for me, but this title knocked it out of the park! I love the stand-in storyline and have immediately started book 2! I love that it was translated from Korean into English so it can garner a whole new audience.
CW: death, suicide, emesis, alcohol, gun violence, kidnapping, murder, physical abuse, child abuse, emotional abuse, child death, medical content, grief, injury, blood, cancer

Very interesting world for this dystopia, but it’s the kind that focuses almost entirely on the main character discovering the cracks in the system rather than giving us any kind of personal development. So while I liked the setting of this one, and the implied critique in a system that is so focused on broadcasting personal stories, I didn’t find it satisfying in the end, and I likely won’t be reading the sequel.

This is perhaps one of my favourite reads in a long time, it’s like Squid Game meets The Hunger Games meets The Truman Show. It reminds me of the golden age YA dystopian books that I ADORED growing up, so it’s unreal getting a new series that captures that era of books so well. I am beyond feral for book 2 and anything more from this author
