I am trying to read a book from each year since I was born 1971. This was my 1977 read. Wow she writes so beautifully. Just the right balance of scenery, history, love and twists and turns. This reads fairly fast and kept me wanting to pick it up.

Honestly, I should probably have been older when I read this. Maybe some day I'll read it again.

3.5. Has potential but doesn’t live up to its reputation for me. Maybe because it was more fit for the time in which it was written. Very drawn out and the characters just weren’t emotionally attached to me like I had wished.

Multigenerational family saga set in the Australian bush.

I loved this story. I thought the section divisions by name were unnecessary because each section featured many of the Cleary family members, but I guess that small complaint is nothing in comparison to the scope of this tale involving the scandalous Father Ralph. I am huge on "sweeping family sagas" and this one had it all.
I was not around during the premiere of the mini-series, but I look forward to watching it now that I have finished the book. I anticipate a great deal of cheesiness, but will give it a go.
