That was a pretty wild run.
It was a bit slow in the beginning but as the story progressed it grew on me and the last 150 pages I read in one sitting.
I think the world building lacked explanation so it was a little confusing. A huge part of the plot is a mystery and I believe the reader should also be able to guess the twist while reading; however I don’t think it’s possible to fully guess it here because of the confusing world building and lack of complete information.
But I liked this book a lot. It felt like fever dream in the best way possible and I fell in love with the love interest. The second half of the book was really intense and it was hard to put down the book.
Not sure what to expect from the sequel. I’m excited but also kinda scared.

This story had a lot of potential but kinda fell short with pacing and execution. Things were introduced at weird times in the story and the first 3rd was incredibly slow. I think that Erin A. Craig had lots of good ideas but didn't really know where she was going until halfway through the book.

One of the big problems is that Annaleigh is not a very active participant in the story. Pretty much everything would have happened whether or not she was present which made it hard to engage with her.

I did enjoy this book but I think it could have been so much more.

this was a lot darker than i was expecting and i’m into it! if mike flanagan ever did a fairytale retelling, it would probably look similar to this.

i was actually more invested in the mystery and the gothic atmosphere than the romance. while cassius and annaleigh were cute and their scenes provided a respite from the tension around them, they did fall in love very fast and there wasn’t a lot to cassius as a character other than being the main love interest. that said, i’ve read way worse YA romances.

the horror/gothic elements were pretty well executed, and several of the visions were genuinely unsettling. i was especially uncomfortable having one of the hallucinations topped off by accidentally walking in on your dad boning your stepmom, which is its own kind of horrific. the main mystery was well written, and though the reveal of the perpetrator was kind of predictable, it felt balanced by the fact that both she and the person she was trying to hurt were complex and not entirely “bad” people. still glad she died in the end. for justice.
