There is a weird micro-genre I am noticing in YA Fantasy/Romantasy. I have taken to calling it "Teenage Girl and her Supernatural Boyfriend solve a murder mystery." Of the several books in this area, this one I liked the most. It almost feels more like a gothic mystery than a standard fantasy. The ending didn't totally come together for me, but it was a pretty decent story overall.

WAIT THIS WAS ACTUALLY INSANE OMG
FIVE STARS FOR SURE!!!!!!!

i’m so happy that i finally read this book because while it was creepy and traumatizing at times, i adored the writing style and the characters and the twists and it really brought me in from the beginning with the overall intrigue

i’m still kinda in shock over the ending like cassius coming back was almost too simple??? i feel like maybe there’s a catch we’ll find out in the second book…but maybe i’m being a worrier and everything’s fine. also speaking of cassius and the romance; i really liked him and annaleigh!! my only complaint is that some of the dialogue between them was kinda rushed imo (like you haven’t know this guy THAT long), but then i kinda chalked it up to making the possibility that he was just an illusion more believable for the reader and i can definitely get past it. like it was easier for me to second-guess whether he was even real if annaleigh was having these storytale-like love confessions with someone so fast yk? idrk how to explain it but that’s my only complain really

also ig my sus list was like half right. i had predicted the dragon guy had something to do with it (check!) but i really didn’t suspect morella. it makes so much sense looking back (and i should’ve suspected god interference with all the supernatural stuff going on) but it’s kinda uncomfortable to sus out the pregnant lady lmao. but like all my others predictions were pretty off…even though i had sussed out fisher and ig i was right??? but like he was an illusion all along rip

Although the fantastical sea-mythical setting was interesting, I unfortunately found that the story wasn't for me. I didn't feel immersed, scared, or interested, and so after 104 pages, I decided to mark this book as DNF.
