Im realizing that maybe i need historical fiction to be asian for me to enjoy the genre as best as i can. Shoutout Mr. Reyes, the Filipino band members, and the mention of Ranch 99.

This didn’t completely shatter my heart in the way that i expected it to. This book is too pensive for that. Instead, it decisively plucked away at my heartstrings until my heart became a blob that only beats for old Asian people who have experienced trauma (miss you grandma).

Homeseeking is less about romance or war, but more about choices and circumstance. I truly felt like I was a witness to both Suchi and Haiwen’s lives. While romantic love is an obvious plot point, the way the author described relationships between parents/kids and siblings was my favorite part of this book. The dual pov from the two main characters from past and present day was a little dizzying but i am impressed at how it came together. 4.5 rounded up to 5 because it’s AAPI month

Ugly cried for at least the last 50 pages. I thought my grandparents' experiences were unique but I learned a lot about that time period and basically how I got to be where I am today

This story is compellingly and creatively written. I would recommend for fans of historical fiction and/or readers looking to empathize with immigrants and those seeking political asylum.

Note** As someone without any knowledge of Eastern/Asian languages I appreciate the care that was shown in differentiating between languages and dialects based on locations. I feel that it adds to character development and helps establish empathy for them as asylum seekers and immigrants.
