This was a reread for me. I read these way back when I was in 6 or 7th grade and I used to love them back then. I still liked this book quite a lot but definitely not as much as I did.
This time around, I found Mia to be very dramatic in the beginning but she got more tolerable throughout the book.
also I forgot how blind she was to Michaels crush on her.

I watched the movie hundreds of times before I finally read the novel and I had to admit, I was a little disappointed. The Book wasn't bad. I actually liked it. But I didn't really liked Mia. I loved Mia in the movies but in the novel, she was very whiny and seemed ungrateful at times. I also did not like Lilly very much. The only characters I liked was Michael, Tina, Lars, Helen and Mia's algebra teacher.
Despite not really liking Mia much, I did enjoy some aspects of the book and I liked all the pop culture references. Hoping that when I read book two that Mia becomes a little more likable.

I listened to this on audio and it is unbelievably cute! I never read these as a tween so it was a new and good experience for me. I have seen both of the Princess Diaries movies and love them! Though there definitely are some differences between the book and moves, they are both good in their own ways. I can say though I was very happy that Anne Hathaway was the voice of Mia in this audiobook. I am used to her being the voice of Mia in the movies so it made the differences between the two less severe. I'm kind of disappointed that Anne doesn't read for all of the audio in the series though. I am however really excited to read the rest of this series!
I loved this book SO MUCH as a child. Mia and I share a birthday (May 1) and area of living (she grew up in NYC; I lived across the river in New Jersey). Both awkward and hated math, I felt a kinship to her. When I turned 14, I asked my mom if I was now a princess, and sadly my mom told me "no."
I am hoping to do a reread since I never finished the series as a whole (I read books 1-5 from 2000-2004, stopped, and then read the Royal Wedding adult novel when it came out in 2015).

It still holds up 20 years later. Most of the references are dated, and now I'm closer in age to Mia's mom than Mia, but I still love it.
