This could have been a really good book, but the execution isn’t there. The book reads like a bunch of tropes put together to make a story and not the other way around, which doesn’t make the story as fluid. First, she is told a great secret but barely thinks of it unless she’s being asked questions about it. Then there is a “competition” to marry the king, but there is no event, nothing to make it a competition. Then you have the mysterious enemy that DOESN’T HAVE A FUCKING NAME!

As for the characters, I did like Arwen and how she interacted with others she felt like a person. The King didn’t feel as developed as Arwen and all of the other characters really were only one dimension. I mean, we could’ve had great side characters, but nope.

My biggest pet peeve of this book was the names. Every place is named with such a descriptive name that isn’t ridiculous and super repetitive. Cinder Village by the Cinder Mountains, Jade City at the bottom of the Jade Mountains and Mines, “Middle bridge” which is the bridge in the middle of the map. Like really? Also, the use of Hades instead of Hell really bothered me, because to us “Hades” is a god/person, not a place, so it’s weird when they use it to cuss.

Anyway, this book could’ve been good but no.
