Book club selection, I really liked this book. I’ve not previously read many books filled with Russian history so that was different. I was completely captured by Count Rostov and watching his life play out in captivity.
You will fall in love with the Count. This is not a page turning, fast paced, plot driven book that I typically enjoy but a slow moving study of life and the situations we are placed in. Highly recommended.
slow-paced
Outstanding read. A Russian aristocrat gentleman exiled to the Metropol Hotel in Moscow. The politics, culture, revolutions, and wars of Russia are all happening outside the hotel as Count Alexander Rostov thrives inside as a gentleman with grace and humor.
I loved Towles' ability to bring the subjects alive with nuances of body language. A tick of the left eyebrow can be the perfect description of a subject's suspicious response to an event.
I "read" the audio version. The narration by Nicholas Guy Smith is perfect. The pace, accents, and whispers bring dimensions of reality and presence to the text.

"I gather you are an early riser, Alexander Ilyich," he said after a moment of silence.
"Men of purpose usually are."

Enthusiastically recommended to me by several people. The story of a Russian count sentenced to house arrest for life, in a hotel. I would find the language transporting and get carried away with certain characters (whenever a child was introduced), but in other sections my interest would lag. Rather uneven for me,

I - 5 stars LOVED - Rules of Civility and The Lincoln Highway. I did not feel the same about this book.

Be still my heart. What a wonderfully told tale. It is having Russian history spoon fed to oneself and poetry and philosophy and cunning and humor and great characters.
This one is a keeper and I am tempted to start it over right now.
