Love, love, love. I want to start it all over again right now.

So charming! I loved the ending - it felt like a mystery novel where all is revealed in the last chapter. I was glad that I had recently read Anna Karenina - not because having done so was critical to understanding the plot of Gentleman, but because it made the experience a little richer - I had an idea of what life was like in Russia before the revolution. I loved how Towles was able to make something as simple as planning a special meal among friends so thrilling and suspenseful. He really has a talent for making the Count's everyday experiences in the limited venue of his hotel rich and exciting.
Four and a half stars. I can't identify precisely what was missing, but I think it had to do with the distance necessarily created by his gentlemanliness. He would consider it rude to speak only about himself, so we get to know him primarily through his actions, and not as much through his thoughts or past history.

It’s not a book that moves quickly, but it’s beautifully written - funny and warm and complex. It’s the perfect book if you enjoy people-watching.

Beautiful prose! This is the dose of escapism that I needed right now. The audiobook was a great way to fall asleep at night.

This may take the cake for my favorite fiction book of the year. This book was genuinely heartwarming, and all the characters were so special and well-written. I was never once bored in the over 460 pages and kept reading wanting to know more about the Count and his adventures. Everyone should read this book.

Brilliant! In my top 5 favorite books. Highly recommend.

Just couldn't finish it. It never caught my interest.

Spanning generations in a Moscow hotel, this book is a delightful, humorous study in one man’s life as well as the history of the times in a country in rapid change. To say I loved it is an understatement. This is a real winner.
