A truly superb read. This book gently meanders as a study of characters and circumstances until it crescendoes to a conclusion. Engaging throughout, it possesses a degree of charm that is lacking in the majority of books written today.

In Alexander we follow a compelling character, who finds his place within the walls of a hotel, moving seamlessly from guest to longtime friend and co-worker. Through his eyes, we are allowed a commentary of whilst those in power change, their manners and hierarchies are actually very similar.

My bookclub of 19 all agreed that this book is phenomenal. I think the term that came up frequently was "modern day classic". Do yourself a favor and read it.

Loved this book. It was so fun. Great setting, great characters, a blend of humor and death and nostalgia and wistfulness; it was a very fun read.

This book did take me a little while to get through because it was one that definitely needed your full attention. This book was recommended to me, and at first I was hesitant to read it as it isn't the type of novels that I typically go for. However, I did end up reading and enjoying this book. I won't lie, it did take me a little while to get into the book after starting it but once I got into it I was eager to continue. I thought this book was very unique, which is one of the reasons I did enjoy it. If you're hesitant to read this book, I would go ahead and try it out anyway.

Beautiful prose made what should be a slow moving story go by very quickly for me. I cared about the characters and felt transported to the setting. Would recommend to fans of John Irving. Going to be thinking about this one for a long time.

Count me out: a nice idea - Russian aristocrat immured by the Bolsheviks in the attic of a luxury Moscow hotel - is bored to death by tedious structuralism, and dreary minutiae. On the Audible version, the English-sounding actor reading it can’t decide if it’s Mosco or Mas-COW, but “fillay” is inexcusable. The writing is so dreary one fixates on these things. Putdownable in the extreme.
