The author is great in making the mystery part of the novel: the intrigue and the clues are done excellent, and they are very different from the first novel. However, I can't say this about the dramatic part of the book—reusing the same tropes as in the first book to move the actions spoiled the impression from otherwise a very good novel. It is even more disappointing because as the standalone book this would be better than the previous one.

I wanted to like this book but didn’t. Way too hard to follow. Could’ve perhaps been a bad translation

The thing about Nordic noir is that the characters are flawed in the most human of ways - mentally physically and emotionally and that’s honest and refreshing after bouts of American physical superiority and illusion. Good for Harry Hole

FIRST LINE REVIEW: "The traffic lights changed to green, and the roar from lorries, cars, motorbikes and tuk-tuks rose higher and higher until Dim could see the glass in Robinson's department store vibrating." Set in Bangkok, this second Harry Hole novel definitely doesn't act as a promo for Bangkok tourism. Ugly, dirty, smelly Bangkok is on full display here and our unlikely hero is dumped into the mess to tackle another convoluted crime. One of the more intelligent crime writers currently at work.
