This was messed up - 4*
I didn't see that coming! This book is packed full with red herrings and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I preferred this one much more to the first one. I feel like Nesbo has found his feet with this novel and I look forward to continuing this series.
I'm so excited to reach #7 - The Snowman but first to the Redbreast (#3).

Really enjoyed the first Harry Hole book. Did not think this one was as good as the first.
Well this is not exactly great literature, but I do enjoy Jo Nesbo's everything-but-the-kitchen sink approach to plotting. It's particularly effective in audio, because you can never be sure that the book is NOT about to end. At any given point, it's probably not; there will be another absurd twist or thirteen first.

Again, probably 3.5 stars. I liked the first one better. Will continue the Harry Hole
series though!
series though!
Waaay much better than The Bat, but, still, not quite there.
There were a few lose edges throughout the end, which I disliked A LOT.
But 4 Stars it issss.

At the start of the book, I was really tempted to throw in the towel but I stuck with it and I’m glad I did. I’m more willing to read more in the series now. There were lots of references to the first book in this one though so probably worthwhile to read it first.
I've noted in other reviews of Nesbo's Harry Hole series that I had to read them "out of order" because the first and second books in the series were not printed in English until recently. So, I started with Redbreast and read through Police, then went back and read the first book. This is the second in the series. When I reviewed the first book, I noted that Harry wasn't the same Harry I knew and loved. Also, the writing was different, you could tell that Nesbo had not yet gotten into his groove. Well, he definitely got into that groove by the second book! This was the Harry Hole I love and the Nesbo writing style that I love!
While this one is told in a linear fashion (Redbreast is where Nesbo first starts playing with time by going back and forth in time and using points of view of characters other than Harry), it has the classic Nesbo pacing that I love. Nesbo gradually reveals the answer to "who done it" but then you realize that you still have 100 pages of book left, so this cannot be "the answer." In fact, you are sitting in a seat cresting the first hill of a giant roller coaster and you have no idea how wild the ride is about to get!
Jo Nesbo's Hole series is the most exciting book series I've read in years. I not only buy the next one the moment it is released, I devour it within days after purchase. Cockroaches is not one to be missed!
