This is 4 stars only because the ending didn't feel complete. I think it’s so the reader can make up their own ending but it was still such an abrupt end. This is my first Shirley Jackson and I’m hooked! It was funny, spooky, tense, and suspenseful. I loved this spoiled family and their crazy notion of what’s to come in the world!

a perfect book. also the funniest book i've ever read. (this is not an exaggeration.) shirley jackson is a genius and i wish i could crawl inside her brain.

the sundial is criminally underrated and i wish more people read it so i could talk about it with them. an immediate and absolute class comedy exemplar.

I have previously very much enjoyed anything written by Shirley Jackson, but this was just not it for me. It was 1950s doomsday preppers with a healthy dose of classism. I felt no empathy for any of the characters. I didn't hate it but I didn't enjoy it much either
