The story was thoroughly captivating and partially educational, especially since a lot of East Asian history isn’t covered in America. I think most people only know an inkling of what Japanese imperialism did to other Asian countries in the past century. I enjoyed how Min Jin Lee creates such diverse characters within a family, all with such complex emotions. Even tho her time skips were a bit odd, I thought they were fine because she would give enough information for us, it didn’t seem necessary to know what had happened every single year of this family’s life especially when spanning so many generations.

The last portion of the book does feel a bit rushed and leaves something to be desired about some characters. But I do enjoy how the story circles back in the last chapter as well.

I honestly don't know what to think I just finished this in one day and I shed some tears at the end. The pacing really confused me, with some characters deaths barely being touched on when they were important characters. But I suppose that was for a reason even if I don't understand it right now. Pro tip: don't read this after finishing your STAAR test... That is proctored.. by teachers walking around....
