brytyjski realizm magiczny jest kuriozalny
za cholerę nie będę nic z tego tytułu pamiętać za tydzień, ale bujał

A book in which things make less sense, and appear harder to piece together, as it goes on. There's some significant shift going on around our two main characters, but they seem self-absorbed or passive enough to be equipped to understand it. I was left with a weird sense of a kind of familiar disorientation, and was thinking about the book for days after I'd finished.

What an odd, strange book. A man has no idea who he is. A woman has no idea where she’s from. Around them, something possibly apocalyptic is happening, though it’s certainly very wet.

The language used is incredible; it’s almost more worthwhile to read this for the language used than the plot or whatever’s going on.

There’s also an inescapable British-ness here that, sadly, leaves me at a loss for some of the point (though I’m familiar enough with Brexit and nationalism that it’s not entirely lost on me).

I’m not familiar with Harrison, except I’ve wanted to read his Viriconium series for forever, but I’ll at least keep an eye out for other books.

I really enjoyed this book, and will try other books by the author. The prose is excellent, and very evocative.

However, you should know that this book is mostly a mood. It's muddled, muggy and oppressive. There isn't much plot to speak of. Something to do with fish people is happening in the background, but it is really just a backdrop to two people drifting through their somehow still incredibly ordinary lives.

The Sunken Land is a tough slog of a read because the two main characters are floundering and fumbling through their lives without a glimmer of passion, purpose, or even minimal meaning. Their aimlessness seems to be the point, but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to make of that. There is the barest hint of a sci-fi story in there, but it haunts the characters without ever becoming fully realized. The descriptions, atmosphere, and sentence structure are admirable, but not enough for this reader to feel rewarded.
