2.5 stars but rounded up because the narrator was good. Someone had compared this to [b:14|15062217|14|Peter Clines|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1338999953s/15062217.jpg|20716929], I could sort of see their comparison in that both books involved an apartment building and weird stuff but I preferred 14.

I adore the way this author takes our world and twists so we see everyday things, thoughts and behaviors in a different light.

This was a quick and fun read that didn't really feel like your average story. The whole thing was basically about how people perceive the world and what that means rather than a linear plot. There was somewhat a traditional save the world type element but that really took a back seat to Diana's ever changing world view. I thought the monsters were great characters and the dog from apartment two was probably my favorite.

I was all set to rag on the book for being a rip-off of 14 by Peter Clines, but looking at the publication dates, this book preceded 14 by a few years. Color me surprised! Given the choice between the two, I'd give the nod to 14, partly because I read it first, and partly because Clines adopted a different tone for the story and gave it its due.
That's not to say Chasing the Moon is bad; Martinez knows how to write a good story, and he knows how to create likeable characters. It's just when you're facing the cosmic horrors from your apartment building and approaching the end of the universe, maybe it can do with a bit less slapstick. I've liked the way Martinez has balanced his humor with the serious in his other books, but it just didn't quite come together like I would have expected from him.
Look, it's not Martinez's fault that I discovered 14 first, and adored it. It is Martinez's fault, though, that this isn't quite as good as his other books. It's more Monster and less In the Company of Ogres (or Gil's All-Fright Diner (or even Too Many Curses (and let's not forget Helen and Troy's Epic Road Quest))), so while it's entertaining, it's not quite his usual fare. It's still not a bad way to spend a few hours, though.
