Was torn between 3 and 4 stars. Doesn’t live up to the hype for me. It started off good, the middle was meh, the main character is very meh, the ending was pretty good. Cannot fault Atwood’s writing either - the dark tone throughout the story feels like one of those weird feverish dreams that you just wanna run away from and have a shower afterwards to shake off the darkness of it.

“But a chair, sunlight, flowers: these are not to be dismissed. I am alive, I live, I breathe, I put my hand out, unfolded, into the sunlight.”

the novel was filled with suspense from start to finish, making it impossible to put the book down because i kept thinking about whatever’s on the other side of the page.

while the writing isn’t what i’m usually used to, it felt good to be challenged in a way where i had to read between the lines and sometimes search for more context. it was like being back in eng lit class

I am officially a Margaret Atwood fan. I’ve always liked her work but this book just made me fall in love with her writing. The plot and characters are really good too, but the writing was just phenomenal. Definitely going to read more of her work.

Sufocante
