The concept was great but some parts of the book were so boring that I wouldn’t pick up the book for DAYS (hence the ABSURD length of time it took me to finish the book). I really liked the gorilla plotline and the mysterious primate in the Congo, that part really intrigued my STEM brain. Other than that, chricton goes into really specific detail on technology and methods which I get that it’s essential but honestly it’s kind of boring to read. I really didn’t like the ending. It felt so unsatisfactory after the whole trip and the dangers they faced. Ross is really stupid

This was indeed an incredibly enjoyable reread after twenty-one years, and still stands the same rating I had given it back then. Lots of facts embedded within the book from various topics such as different types of technologies (some are obsolete now), the Congolese civil war, the Pygmies, the cannibalistic tribes, volcanic eruptions, rainforests, etc. Some good quotes as well. This book never bored me. I do not know how exactly I had felt the first time I had read it, but it was certainly more interesting to read now after having read Alan Moorehead's [b:The White Nile|345912|The White Nile|Alan Moorehead|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1388184367l/345912._SY75_.jpg|336217]. :)
More of a 3.5. Very scientific and not like the movie...the movie is definitely a based loosely on the book fair

In a race to find a particular diamond mine that could influence technology as we know it, 24-year-old Dr. Ross is determined to beat out the competition, no matter the cost. Peter Elliott is bent on figuring out the strange dreams his gorilla Amy has been signing about. They're all going into the Congo. And what they find there will astound them, fascinate them, and terrify them.
Not my favorite of Crichton's thrillers, but this novel was okay. The 1970s technology holds up surprisingly well and it felt less dated than I thought it would. My problem is that there weren't too many likeable characters and I didn't really feel like I connected with any of them. There is a gorilla who speaks sign language, so that was pretty cool and finding out what happened to Amy the gorilla kept me turning the pages.

This was fun and kept my attention. However, I did find myself skimming over the super long paragraphs explaining technology-related things because the jargon was pretentious and unnecessary.
