It wasn't as bad as I thought. Book 2 was painful to get through, and while Brighton and Maribelle are insufferable to read through and the book spends so much time on them, the other characters are somewhat okay. (view spoiler).Emil could be hard because he was so incredibly stupid and kept making terrible decisions, but when he wasn't doing that, he was alright I guess. I know Emil cares for Brighton and all despite Brighton having no redeeming qualities whatsoever (seriously, if you're gonna be a villain at least own up to it instead of whining and yapping nonstop; whiny characters are the worst), but he was also just incapable of using his brain when it came to his brother. (view spoiler). I totally just forgot about the love triangle and wow, that was annoying. Honestly, Maribelle's plotline was kind of funny because it was so stupid, like (view spoiler). Really felt like a waste of time.

The ending also felt very halfhearted. The whole Sunstar presidency (can we talk about the atrocious names for a second? Nicolette Sunstar, her husband Ash Hyperion, and their daughter Proxima? Her running mate Shine Lu? And of course Sunstar has light powers? These are names that sound cool to an 8 year old. I can buy Shine Lu because i could see Asian parents giving their kid that name, but alongside all the others is just ridiculous. Good thing this world is fictional because nobody would take that family seriously). Anyway, that whole thing was boring and predictable, which was fine. Brighton's ending was very rushed and he really snapped out of everything fast.

Despite all that, the book went by very fast. I may have skimmed over a lot of Brighton and Maribelle's whining, but I got through it much faster than I expected and for all the complaints I've been having in this review, I didn't dislike it as much as I thought I would.
