Wow. What an absolutely beautiful and moving journey. Watership Down is without a doubt one of my favourite books with some poignant passages that will stick with me.
Despite being a children's book it is more eloquently written than most adult fiction. It is philosophical, dark, brutal at times. It touches on the cruelty and savagery of war and tyranny, but also on bravery, hope and freedom. Just overall really incredible, but I personally would not recommend it for children.

I know I read this as a kid, maybe in 6th grade, but remembered nothing about it so decided to give it a fresh read. So many peopke remarked on the book being sad when I mentioned I was reading it but it's really just a tale of high-stakes thrilling adventure, the Watership rabbits are a heroic lot of clever little blighters who get nearly everything they want and learn to trust each other and rely on one another's strengths to build a strong and wholesome family.
It can be stressful though, and the writing isn't always the easiest to read - but a great story.

What a refreshing, bracing story. Nothing forced or wedged in to the narrative; the author never seems to be grasping for what to say next or trying to score didactic points. Every rabbit, every conversation, every fight feels solid and real. Just a breath of fresh air. I was more absorbed in this story than I have been in any other for quite some time.
