This book is more foreboding and has very little romance in it for YA fantasy. I’m marking it as a dystopian book because it tells a story of a future in which vampires take over the planet in a way such that there are entire towns cordoned off from the rest of the population. The vampires and some of the humans stuck with them are used as video entertainment for people in other cities.

I normally love Holly Black, but thie one just felt off for some reason. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for it, or maybe it was just too different from what I normally read, but I didn't fall in love like I normally do with her books.

I have been enjoying reading whatever Holly Black books I can get a hold of. This one is unique and I enjoy the vampire tale. There’s lots of familiar elements of vampire lore mixed with interesting characters and a dark but engaging storyline. Tana’s story arc is so immersive and well written - I could see her making bad choices and fully understood what she was doing and supported her. Aidan is a great character. Fully likeable but also Tana’s ex-boyfriend so I didn’t want to root for him. I can’t decide if I like that it was a stand alone, or want a bunch more details on things and to read about these characters in more books

Amazing! First time I listened to an audiobook and I really didn't think I would like it. And in truth I wasn't thrilled with the reader. But the story was epic, characters well developed, and completely riveting ending. Holly Black has outdone herself!
