The Great Hunt by Robert Jordan

The last time I wasn't really feeling it with a book this long I pushed through and regretted it. And it's not just this book, there's a whole series. The writing has improved from the first book but the plot is not strong enough to pull me through, and so many of the characters are just annoying me. Plus, it's only book 2 and I already can't keep all of the names straight. I just don't think this series is for me unfortunately.

Wheel of Time Re-Read!!!
I reread book 2 because of the show. Episode 6 was named Blood Calls Blood which is a chapter name at the beginning of book 2, so I decided to read it to see if there was ANYTHING similar plot wise (there wasn't, man that was a good chapter though) and season 2 comes out September 1 so I also have to catch up on book 3. Can't begin to measure my disappointment they're skipping the events at the start of book 2, they're some of the best sequences in the book, the psychological aspect of Rand knowing he can channel, the tension of him trying to stay hidden from the Amyrlin, the trolloc attack! All of it is great. And it really shines a light on how heartbreaking Rand's situation is, he can't trust himself or anyone else, he knows he's going to go mad and die, and he has to push away all his friends to protect them from himself, all of which is very sad and very compelling. But I guess that's all gone now because all his friends already know he's the Dragon Reborn and he's not coming back to Fal Dara (harumph). Some of his inner thoughts and dialogue with Egwene is truly one of the best parts of this book. One more thing about the show. It's about the Seanchan, more specifically, the armor. So much of their costuming isn't book accurate, but that's not what I want to point out.
Does anyone else get reminded of Castor and Pollux's camera back gear from Mockingjay (a Hunger Games movie) when they see the back of the Seanchan armor?https://64.media.tumblr.com/548797c07eee7a40c7476dcd73de4e14/b7859e895f27c458-89/s2048x3072/347f67a81ff2762224f0ff944826423a4d91501c.jpg

Last thing I promise. I really don't like the show's cover art for this book. Moiraine is in the forefront even though she's barely in this book and she and Rand are in front of Tar Valon for some reason? Also why did Rand shave his head?

Puh. I am glad I am done.
Like the first book, the second just didn't catch me. The story is just so slow.. Don't get me wrong, I like well developed, slow stories, but this one was just... boring. I had to force myself through the first 600 pages... The last 100 were easy to read and actually enjoyable, but that part came a little late and also things happened really fast then.
It might not help, that I absolutly hate Rand. He is a typical toxic and really stupid "Hero". The only way getting through his POV was reading it as parody of typical fantasy heros. Sadly, thats not true and he might be the basis of many following. The only way Rands POV can catch me in future if he turns out to be the Anti-Hero.
The whole book is also drenched in sexism - or as described by others "The hard fight between the sexes". Mhm. Sure.
Jordans World Building is fantastic - the only reason I will try to read the third book, but his writing style is... well.. bad.
Spoiler He has to tell us thing, because he cant show them to us (like the friendship between Mat, Perrin and Rand, how and why? I dont see it in their interactions). The book is full of repetitions of the same phrases, its like the people know only a few sentences! Also there is up to none character development. Like Nyaneve still beeing super stuck on getting revenge on Moraine, even though she went through plenty of events that should have showed her different - or a way out.

The writing improved drastically from the first book. The women are well written and more complex. The story had some unpredictable turns and a few good moments of humor.
