Set in the USA in the late 1800s, this story weaves together various characters’ story strands as they come together to form a team under the leadership of Professor William James of the Society for Psychical Research; their aim to investigate paranormal phenomena. As ‘The Eidola Project’ they are Sarah Bradbury, a former sideshow psychic who has run away; Edgar Gilpin, an African-American inventor with abilities of prediction; Annabelle Douglas, who is Professor James’ former student, and the nightmare-haunted Nigel Pickford, former Confederate Lieutenant and now a drunken derelict.

Although the story starts with Sarah, it doesn't continue with her but rather jumps to Edgar and then the other characters and I found it difficult to tell if there was a main protagonist. There is also a lot of repetition between paragraphs which doesn't lead to a smooth narrative. Despite this the characters are well-drawn, the snippets of 19th century day-to-day life are charming and the plot has good structure even if it does veer off-course thematically in the final stage.

I did enjoy the book, although my complete lack of belief in the supernatural had me laughing in places where I probably should have been scared. One final thought - Sarah is the youngest member of the team and has run away from a travelling carnival where she was a sideshow psychic– does that make her a small medium at large?

Incredibly impressive debut from this author! The Eidola Project is a fun, thrilling and captivating little paranormal book about a group of supernatural researchers and a clairvoyant girl set in the 19th century.

It's been a while since I've really enjoyed a paranormal ghost book since it really isn't my cup of tea and usually gets very stale and repetitive to me, but this is a completely different experience. I absolutely loved how grounded and realistic it all felt like which really gives the book an extra creepy factor, and the fact that this is inspired by true events really made me fly through it. The fact that the book takes place in post civil war America also creates a bit of tension between certain characters which was very intriguing.

On a last note, all the main characters also have great chemistry and play so well off of each other both in positive and negative ways (again with the tension), and I can't wait to pick up the author's next installment of this power team.
