The depth of this story is near unmatched. I've read it multiple times, and I always find something new and significant. The allegory aspect is what makes it so huge to me, but even as a story the book is just GOOD. Still, the allegory has illustrated truths to me in ways that have stuck throughout life and made a definite difference in me.

“What God says is best, is best, though all the men in the world are against it.”

For those who haven't also read Part 2, you need to read Part 2. Part 1 is victorious and Part 2 feels like the reality of the daily Christian life. Both parts combining to an extraordinary book. I love Pilgrim's Progress.

“I seek a place that can never be destroyed, one that is pure, and that fadeth not away, and it is laid up in heaven, and safe there, to be given, at the time appointed, to them that seek it with all their heart. Read it so, if you will, in my book.”

As a Christian, I found it pretty useful. It isn't a book to be read once and stashed away. Its like a compass, a progress report, which should be read constantly to stay on the path of Christian belief.

il libro più brutto che abbia letto in vita mia spero che questi nove crediti di letteratura inglese ne siano valsi la pena. mai più deliri cristiani. un quarto di stella solo perché mi fa ridere quante volte viene usata la parola “methinks”.

This is the only book I've read that opened with an author's apology. It is the only book I've read that needed it.

It is just really....really.............bad. no idea how it became a foundational text of english literature.

On the other hand, Bunyan was pretty good with unintentional humor. "in a word, death and whatnot" is hilarious.

Told with the simplicity of a campfire tale, or a friend breathlessly telling you about his adventures, without much care for foreshadowing or subtext. Apparently this book closely mirrors the Bible, which I have not read much of, but from what I'm familiar with, I get a sense of plain-spoken discussion of sacred, unshakeable truth from both. When you read of Christian or Faithful's conversions, they're not told in artful sermons, but in honest, almost embarrassed or bewildered confession. This book can be perplexing if you're familiar with typical narrative style: seemingly critical moments in the story are narrated over with a few lines of text, and then you'll run into pages and pages of dialogue over something relatively inconsequential. There are a lot of parts where a character will re-narrate whole scenes...

A Christian Allegory from the 1600's. That's a long time ago and the book has never been out of print. Now that is a legacy. You wonder if John Bunyan knew he was writing something that would last for 400 years.

I will admit to needing to go back and read this again. I don't know if I was focused enough on it or not, or if the book simply wasn't for me, but I really can't say much of what was happening. I know all the characters are named for what they are. The christian is named Christian and the person with hope is named Hope and so on. There is Fear and all kinds of other characters. I was reading about this book and I found out, it's like an adventure story. I had no clue there was an adventure going on in this story. I really didn't pick that up. That is sort of sad on my part.

I will say I listened to this and the recording was okay, but my mind slid away from the story and the plot didn't stick with me. I thought the writing sounded like poetry and there were some beautiful uses of language and that's why I gave it 3 stars.

Maybe some day I will go back and read it again and get it.
