This would have been 5 stars except I felt like Allen was trying a little too hard to use young, hip language and came off as what it was: an older person trying to convince you that they're young and hip. Regardless, it's still an entertaining story with great characters.

i love the idea of a retelling!! and to make it from the POV of the family's dog... but i don't love the insertion of a love story?? i feel like it overtook the original plot of the book.

A fun updated version of the 12 Dancing Princesses in which the princesses have been replaced by 12 African-American brothers living in Harlem. Some of the slang is outdated (do people still say phat?), but the tone is fun and I thought it was great that the family dog was the narrator.
