This graphic novel follows Tiến, the son of a Vietnamese refugee. Tiến is gay and he doesn’t know how to tell his parents and is scared of what they will say. Tiến‘s struggles to communicate with his parents because of the language barrier, but they communicate with eachother through storytelling. This story and the artwork is beautiful and poignant.

As the child of a refugee, this book really struck a nerve with me and it really encapsulated all of the feelings that have been going around. I absolutely adored the art and the characters and I would recommend this book to everyone!!

This book is amazing. The art is beautiful, the writing is wonderful, and has a nostalgic feel to it. It made me cry, it's got so much heart. I'm going to edit and update this after I let it sink in some more since I just finished it, but definitely a recommendation from me!!
Very mild spoilers for the ending (if you need it!)
It ends happily between the mom and the main character,  Tíên. Just in case you were wondering!

I've been looking forward to reading The Magic Fish for a looong time. Not surprising at all is the gorgeous artwork. I've always been a fan of Trungles' flowy, elegant lines and each page is breathtaking. I enjoyed the pacing and thought it was creative how the fairy tales are interwoven with Tien and Helen's stories. It's a very emotional book and I cried (twice). I highly recommend.

This graphic novel was a beautiful exploration of one family's interactions told through both their lives and fairytales that parallel their experiences. It talks about sexuality, immigration, loss, love, and the intersection of different identities that can occur within one family and within one person. The Magic Fish is hopeful, sorrowful, and emotional as it dances and weaves its way to its ultimate conclusion.
