SO SO GOOD!!!! perfect summer to fall transition book, and oh my god, THORNE
This was a very cute premise: spicy retellings of classic literature, return to hometown, second-chance romance, and a little mystery. It's got an adorable title and cover illustration, to boot!
The novel definitely succeeds with some of these, especially the return to hometown vibes. Literally nothing feels more homey than a cafe in a small town, full of quirky characters. And returning to your hometown because you're struggling with your career and finding yourself? Boy, who can't relate.
Unfortunately Blame It on the Brontes lacked the tightness in writing and editing I have come to expect in romance/women's fiction these days. The transitions are a bit too jarring, the backstory not necessarily set up, and dialogue a little off. If the chapters were shorter, maybe I'd have minded it less, but this book, which clocks in at 384 pages, just felt a little long.
Many thanks to Forever (Grand Central Publishing) and NetGalley for providing me an ARC for review.

I really wanted to like this book; I’m a dedicated rom com fan and a lover of romance and classic literature so it seemed right up my alley. I was really bothered that the main characters seemed so unlikeable, and it seemed implausible that a smart cookie like Athena wouldn’t already have more clues to the literary mystery brewing in her small hometown. I kept hoping things would improve, that I would end up caring more about Athena and Thorne, but this one was just not for me. Maybe it’s for you?

Very predictable generic rom com.
Thena annoyed me with her absolutes instead of just shutting up and thinking of others first.
