It was very interesting to compare the book to the play at first, but the second half of the book really dragged on.

Phantom of the Opera, a haunting masterpiece, remains a constant companion. Its tragic love story, punctuated by moments of humor and action, is a timeless classic. I'm continually amazed by Erik's complex character, a depth rarely explored in adaptations. If you haven't delved into the original novel, I urge you to do so. Its brilliance, enhanced by Andrew Lloyd Webber's iconic music, will leave you spellbound.

i loved the story's urge to prove its own factuality and its self-reflexive quality. it fights to defend itself against criticism, constructing its own authenticity from recounts and sources in a very 19th century way (long 19th c?). also enjoyed the gothic-ness of it all, the references to/themes of theatre (like faust) and to top it off there's the elision from spectre to spectator... delicious writing
