Please note that I read an earlier English translation of this that is in the public domain so I might not have received the full experience of this book but honestly I liked this book enough to want to re-read it at some point with an more recent English language translation of it!

That being said this is a book much like Bram Stoker's "Dracula" that tends to be my favorite kind of classic literature! A type of book that has had many film adaptations/takes on it, and has a bit of a "sacred cow" associations to it, but in reality is actually a well done potboiler of a book that is fun to read yet still has stuff going on underneath the surface!

I am really glad to have FINALLY cleared this one off my bucket list in some shape or form!

An interesting read in terms of its status as the source for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical and the story’s popularity after its publication in 1910. Here, the “Opera Ghost” is a full-on murderous villain, cruelly tormenting and torturing the staff and spectators at the Paris Opera while obsessively stalking a young opera singer. It is messily plotted, absurd and sensational but a lot of fun in places.

My second read through of this awesome novel, twenty years makes all the difference in the things I pick up on. I still love it though. It's such a heady mixture of horror, opulence, absurdity and pity. "Poor Erik!" indeed.

The Phantom of the Opera starts out painfully slow but once it starts going it's good. It's a good horror novel that holds a huge place in the cultural landscape, being adapted many times over the years. I've never seen any adaptations, and I suspect that a trimmed down version of this story would actually improve it, but the original is still worth a read.
