I love Isabel Allende and have learned so much from her books. However, this one felt rather mechanical most of the way. It all comes together at the end in a way that was surprising yet believable but I wondered what it would have felt like if we had known some of those details earlier in the book.
Certainly many of the images and situations the characters experience will not soon leave my mind … and I feel this is Ms. Allende’s intention: to deepen our understanding of people who face unimaginable challenges due to forces beyond their control: governments, economic structures, and pure evil in others. It’s dark and Ms. Allende makes it real.

In the midst of winter by nick Castor, Isabel Allende, Amanda Hopkinson
NY in 1970's and a blizzard hits. Richard owns the building and rents out basement to a woman, Luciana from S. America.
While Richard is bringing his cat to the vet during the blizzard he hits a woman in her car. Later she shows up in his apartment and is not able to say what she wants. He gets Luciana and after some laced brownies they can understand one another better.
She ends up staying as it's not safe to be outside due to the storm. Chapters go back in time to their lives as to how they were raised, where and under what circumstances.
Abaleen is undocumented and has a body in the trunk. Luciana understands and wants to help her out of the mess.
They each have their tragic starts as the story alternates with the present day...
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

Really, a 2.85 stars. A few thoughts
a) I felt a lot like I was reading an episode of Law and Order SVU
2. I didn't bond with the characters until the last 40 pages
c) My rating may have been influenced in that I had really high hopes. But it was a good, timely story, and a good read that really touched on some compassion and empathy issues that are good lessons right now.

For me a little too political but at the same time very informative - I found the second half of the book much more entertaining.
