okay, so I liked the book. the writing was nice and the story was nice but I am just side-eyeing Maia so hard when she's like 'the scissors, even though they magically do my work in like an eighth of the time are totally MY work, it's just ENCHANCING it.' she sounds like some people on the internet these days, that's all imma say about that. iykyk

the romance also felt very rushed to me. I really liked the slow burn of it during the competition, when it was edan teasing maia about really being a girl, and how he was helping her through the competition. at first I didn't trust him or his motivations but I thought the way he flirted with her was cute. then they go on their journey together and they go from being like almost about to start a romance to suddenly edan is like i've decided i'm in love with you and wish to court you and marry you and open a sewing shop by the sea and maia is like YES I'M SO IN. but it just doesn't...work for me? because she went from being so wary of him to wanting to marry him in less than a month? I get that traveling together in a situation where you're going through a lot of traumas can make them bond quicker but it still felt far too rushed for my liking.
adventurous tense

Really enjoyed the plot. Romance was ok but cliche at times.

Project runway meets Mulan indeed!
Maia is a very likeable protagonist. She’s kind, brave and a little bit naive.
The worldbuilding is nothing too complicated, easy to understand. But I would have liked a more detailed description of their outfits and buildings.
The love interest is utterly sweet and a perfect fit for Maia. It doesn’t always have to be a dominant man, or a spicy romance. This book proves that.

Nevertheless, great book. Enjoyable story and enjoyable characters!

Listened to the audiobook and was quickly reminded why YA often isn’t for me—there’s just not enough depth. The main character, Maia, is incredibly naive and narrated in a whiny tone, and the enemies-to-lovers plot comes with a 500-year age gap 🤮. Bonus points, though, for the focus on sewing and fiber crafts, which was genuinely delightful.

Rating: 3.5
I really enjoyed this novel, with vibrant characters and a wonderful setting. My only difficulty with it was that it felt a little disjointed - the two parts almost felt like two completely different novels. But I enjoyed them both!
The only reason I'm not rating this higher is that it's maybe a little bit forgettable... (don't hate me for saying so!). It's been less than a week since I finished, and the plot is already fading from my memory...
