This book was awesome! The world and the characters were amazing. I couldn’t stop reading it. And the relationship between the MC and the love interest, I was giggling my feet like a little girl! This book got me out of my reading slump! Now my only thing I didn’t like the book, is that the love interest was introduced in the middle of the book, I maybe wrong since my memory sucks. But I highly recommend this book. And there nothing inappropriate like the rest of the YA books. They kissed and stuff but no smut at all. So this is my review and I hope everyone else enjoys it as well!
Bye!

Needless to say, hab die Romanze null gefühlt.
Also was ist eigentlich die Aussage hier?

DID NOT FINISH

Ugh I wanted to like this so badly but goddamnit!! It was so wrong in so many ways!!

I had high expectations for this book cuz of the mulan-inspired backdrop (girl disguises herself as her brother to save her family) chinese culture (women being confined to motherly roles etc) and the skill of tailoring (sewing, stitching, embroidery, so interesting!!). I just feel like it’s much too simple/superficial given the incidents that had happened (e.g., I felt that her brothers passing away due to war wasn’t handled well, the grief/mourning for them was so surface-level, there wasn’t any description of intense agony/anguish or the kind of emotional scars it leaves on someone NOTHING, just sad and ok move on like HUH?)

and also I noticed sth weird abt the author’s writing in the sense that she TELLS the readers what happens in a very kiddish, primary school way lol. Just like oh no! Someone spilled tea on my shawl! And a line from the book “But as I looked up - there, behind a magnolia tree, was the emperor!” Like huh, u playing peek-a-boo with him or what? Felt like Dora the fking explorer, like what on earth was that? It throws me off damn badly (the ! rly doesn’t help either lol) and I just feel like the book so far doesn’t have much depth to it. Maybe cuz I’m expecting more given the heavy topics this book deals with (loss, discrimination, and even just Chinese customs) which carries more depth to it that this book fails to capture.

It’s like a simple book for young children imo, or maybe cuz I’ve read Iron Widow…and nothing Chinese culture related will ever come close to it haha. There was rly zero world building, then there’s war and politics at the beginning then eh suddenly got magic also, like dafuq is going on. Anyway, terrible!
