For once the book is what it is advertised as- Mulan meets project runway! It’s an enjoyable ride overall. The author had perfectly blended eastern mythology with elements of fairy tale, personally the most surprising thing is the world she had created, it is complete, believable and brilliant. I enjoyed learning the folklore that had been subplot of the story that constantly runs in the background, while I found the main plot in the foreground is quite slow until half the books, yes things happen- we get who is what and all but still I found that I was starting to not care about some of the characters like The Emperor or Lady Sarnai which has to do with the plot.
However! once the second part of the book begins it is totally a different kind of adventure, it reminded me of many Asian stories that I grew up listening to. I enjoyed Maia’s character ARC very much and the emphasis on what the author wanted to tell- Being a girl shouldn’t/doesn’t stop you from becoming whatever you want to,the sky is the limit indeed(literally)!
The Cliffhanger is sharp enough to leave you craving for more and subtle enough to not leave you frustrated or dissatisfied, I can’t wait for the Unravel the dusk as it looks like it’s going to be another brilliant adventure on the magic carpet

A perfect Mulan retelling for those who consider creativity as a form of strength. Instead of becoming a soldier, the main character, Maia, wishes to become an Emperor's tailor consequently replacing her brother and taking over his identity for a contest in the palace. But the adventure doesn't end there. Maia finds herself a companion who follows her during her final task of capturing the laughter of the sun, tears of the moon and blood of the stars to create the legendary three dresses requested by the Emperor's future bride. The task is daunting and the journey is emotional, leading to a striking conclusion. Still, the story doesn't end there for there is yet another book to be explored.
:) Sharing again since it's publishing day! 7/9/19
I absolutely loved this book. Wow! The "Mulan meets Project Runway" tagline does not do this justice. It's a story about a girl who takes her father's place at the imperial palace to join a competition to find the next tailor for the Emperor. But it's also sooo much more than that. That part of the story takes up about one third of the book. The adventure and romance that follows left me devouring each page. Maia and Edan are adorable and I love them both so much. I cannot wait until the next book!!
I received an advance copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalleyfor letting me review this title!

I didn't really enjoy this book. I really liked the first half, don't get me wrong. It was really fun and reminded me of a mix between girls of paper and fire and the selection if you took out the romance and added 11 old men.
But then it became more like a mix of girl of paper and fire and the selection, minus the girls being gay and the selection- well, the selection was still the same. I don't really like the selection.
The romance. The romance was my number one issue. It was just- dropped out of NO WHERE. I enjoyed the banter, but the second they were like "omg * kiss kiss *" it became 100% worse. It felt rushed, it felt stuck and it felt intrusive. It felt like Elizabeth Lim wrote a whole ass book then remembered she wanted romance in it so she just stuck that plotline in somehow. Which is upsetting, because this whole story would've been - in my opinion - SO much better if it was slow burn (slower then this, at least), or no romance at all.
I mean, Edan is a great character and all but I am disappointed with how he became the whole plot.
Less romance, more magical dresses - thank you.
