Tears, so many tears.
I loved Vincent's art so much already, but love him even more now.
An incredible, engaging, heartbreaking, informative and captivating biography of the Van Gogh brothers. I'm so glad this is the first in depth biography I've read of Van Gogh since it tells the story of Vincent and Theo as brothers and artists. Because without Theo and his wife Jo we wouldn't have the Vincent Van Gogh we know today. This is non fiction but I flew through it thanks to the readability and amazing storytelling of Deborah Heiligman.
I highly recommend the audiobook narrated by Phil Fox. He has the best voice for narrating books and as a native Dutch speaker I highly appreciate his efforts at pronouncing names and places "the right way" (not to sound purist).
I've loved this every bit as much as I love Vincent's work and I ask everyone who is even the slightest bit interested in his life, work, personality... to read (or listen to) this book.

Wow, this book! Excellent information, though in a lot of ways not really enjoyable because it's so difficult to read about all the sad parts of the Van Gogh's brother's lives.

I did really appreciate the portrayal of early family life, and the closeness of the family, while they were also very conservative. (Some writers seem to struggle with the concept that a family can be conservative and good at the same time...) Highly recommended for anyone who is interested in the life of Vincent Van Gogh, especially in the context of his family.
