Not bad. Mysterious and unsettling. Motherhood/chosen family, and how love can twist you to do terrible things. There were attempts to add levity and deep personal connections, neither of which really worked.

Flipping back and forth in time kept me guessing enough to stay engaged, but a lot of the dialogue and characters themselves were just not very interesting. The romance subplot was not believable. The ending was depressing.

First 10 chapters of this book were fantastic with setup, character development, mystery, worldbuilding, and pacing. Then it stopped for the rest of the book. The 2 stars are for a creative concept with the book eaters and setting a fantastic gothic horror tone. As well as some well written scenes. Overall, it fell flat. It was a heavy character driven story, but lacked a lot of character development for me. As well as
wasting a lot of time in the past. Being in the past so often the author wasn't able to build up present tension, character relationships, and tension well enough. The ending was also very predictable.
It felt like you were in a DnD campaign and the party decided to speed run the main objective skipping all cut scenes and side quests of interest.

This was so unexpectedly excellent. A very underrated book, with a fantastic performance by the audiobook narrator

This book just really disappointed me and I realised I didn't really care what happened to the end. I didn't feel invested in the characters and I felt the layout didn't really work. The chapters about Devon's younger life were insightful, but as I got through the book they felt so unnecessary. Also, the writing did not flow that well and I found it difficult to stay engaged.

I think the book offers a really interesting premise but it just wasn't convincingly carried off for me. I am sure this will be enjoyable to others though.
