Were the brothers Grimm to write a modern day fairytale complete with a princess, vampires and Hollywood-level mayhem - that is what we have here. But then, maybe it would be the sisters Grimm? A female protagonist of great perseverance and strength. Many books consumed, and quotes to open each chapter. Fun!

I loved this book! I am so happy Illumicrate chose this as their monthly September book or it might have slipped my attention but I am so glad I discovered and read it. Even though at 300 pages it feels somewhat rushed and I wish I had more time to explore both characters and world, I enjoyed the ride throughly.
Mix The Shadow of the Wind's love of books with the raging politics of The Handmade's Tale, write a fantasy but at a thriller page and full of twists and revelations in a two time paralel timelines that finally come together and you have this amazing book.
This is worth the read and I will definitively be reading more by Sunyi Dean ♥!

no rating because i DNFed - i tried reading this book twice and listening to the audiobook once and i can’t make it past chapter 5. i don’t know what it is that won’t get me interested in it…it feels like the story was supposed to be about vampires and then it was just turned into alien book eaters? i might have cared a bit more if there was a more interesting aspect to it. might try it again if i ever am in the mood but its just not worth it to me at the moment

The first book of spooky season and it really delivered. The fantasy with almost a horror subgenre works so well for this book.

The adventure, motherly love and sprinkling of romance towards the end of this book is balanced really well so that nothing trumps the other and makes for a really enjoyable read. I definitely didn't find this book as horror-filled as other books I have read however it definitely is there. The idea of a literary alien species living amongst humans in England is such an interesting concept.

I enjoyed the time jumps between chapters as it gave you the context of Devon as a main character and the surrounding characters (such as the arc of Ramsey) and how the world of Book-Eaters whilst not eating up too much of the page count. It is also written in a digestible way that is well written without being prose-like.
