Gently falls the Bakula.
🌸
Recently one of the readers suggested me to pick up this book and told me that I won't be disappointed by it. And I wasn't. I started reading this book the previous evening and finished it just a few minutes ago. By now, having read five books of Sudha Murty, I have to admit that she has mastered the art of storytelling. She narrates them gracefully with the characters being described so aptly. Gently falls the Bakula is a tribute to all the women who sacrifice their futures while dedicating their lives to familial commitments.
🌸
Shrimati and Shrikant were the brightest students in the class and were pitched against each other by the classmates. But as they grew, their rivalry turns into friendship and then blossoms into love. Shrikant moves to Bombay for studies and nails a job as a software engineer in one of the reputed companies. Shrimati, on the other hand, chooses to master History and indulges in Arts and culture. Years pass and they get married inspite of their families being against it. What follows next is Shrikant's growth in the company while Shrimati supports him all the way. She puts aside her desire of acquiring a PhD and assists Shrikant in becoming successful by each passing year. But the feeling of loneliness starts haunting Shrimati who feels that her thirst and ache to study is still fresh as the first day.
🌸
Shrimati starts realising the subtle yet drastic changes in Shrikant as he starts enjoying the luxuries that money brings along with it. She feels alienated with no one to talk to considering how often Shrikant travels for business. She then makes a decision which would finally free her from the burden of being held down for ten years. This book is beautifully written considering how the author has perfectly nailed the emotions that Shrimati goes through. Her emotional turbulence and Shrikant's ignorance has been well captured and portrayed in the book. Being a woman comes with its own set of responsibilities and compromises that we carry out knowingly and unknowingly to balance the familial aspects. I absolutely loved the plot and the reality behind the story. An absolute must read.

For a book which was written 30yrs back, this was a very unconventional ending. Nicely written and very well portrayal of the problems of an Indian wife. In India mother's sacrifice is a sacrifice but the wife's sacrifice is her duty.
