I love Katherine Centers books. They are rom-coms but the characters deal with deeper issues than the normal & the heroine is typically in a male dominated job but totally kicks ass at it.
This read follows Cassie, a female fire fighter, who has never fully recovered from teenage trauma. As her life in Texas falls apart she heads to her moms. In Massachusetts, she faces a rough road to earn the respect of her colleges & figure out that crazy thing called love.

When Cassie's life is flipped on its head, she needs to start from scratch. Both her relationship with her estranged mother and her job as a fire fighter. She's constantly underestimated and struggles to let down the defences she's built to keep herself safe. I loved that despite the gorgeousness of the MMC, the Rookie doesn't end up saving her. Cassie saves herself.

I listened to the audiobook and the narrator sounded like either Holly Hunter or Jodie Foster. I found it unpleasant, but that's a me issue. I didn't care for the excessive cussing either. All in all, Hello Stranger was MUCH better.

Center gives us a complex woman to root for,  and she is a real heroine: a firefighter and EMT dealing with sexism in a very male dominated profession. When her family and personal history force her to move across the country and start over in a new fire department,  Cassie discovers new ways to address her past and build a new future.
