I love Katherine Centers books. They are rom-coms but the characters deal with deeper issues than the normal & the heroine is typically in a male dominated job but totally kicks ass at it.
This read follows Cassie, a female fire fighter, who has never fully recovered from teenage trauma. As her life in Texas falls apart she heads to her moms. In Massachusetts, she faces a rough road to earn the respect of her colleges & figure out that crazy thing called love.

TYSIAF is a gem of a book about healing, forgiveness, change, and how women can be truly badass.

Cassie is a firefighter better than the boys but in a little town in Massachusetts the only thing some people can see is one thing, her gender. Cassie is smart, determined, and it was amazing to see her open up over the span of the book!

This book was more on the insta-love side than I normally gravitate towards but I really enjoyed it so much!

Absolutely adore this book, but don’t go into it thinking its a romance - i’d argue its more fiction as you follow the journey of the main character more than the romance!

Given the subject matter of the book, I was surprised how graphically horrible all of the practical jokes are in this book that we're supposed to think are endearing. Like a coworker asking the MC out of the blue to screw when he knows she's panicking and therefore might be trickable, with all of her other coworkers including her boss watching ready to laugh at her for taking too long to refuse. That's how the book opens, and then the next thing is sexual assault, and I really feel like the author doesn't understand that the first thing is actually workplace sexual harassment being enabled by the power structure over the MC, but she things beating someone unconscious is appropriate as soon as touching is involved. But then there's all these "pranks" when she's working that are also assault, just not sexual assault and those are also supposed to be fun and fine. Very uncomfortably mixed messages for me around consent, which undermined the core message of the book.

A cut above your average romantic drama, well-rounded dynamic characters, a protagonist with a clear voice, action, and good plot structure.

I liked that the assault wasn’t treated as some *big reveal* but rather something she had to continually work to get over .

When Cassie's life is flipped on its head, she needs to start from scratch. Both her relationship with her estranged mother and her job as a fire fighter. She's constantly underestimated and struggles to let down the defences she's built to keep herself safe. I loved that despite the gorgeousness of the MMC, the Rookie doesn't end up saving her. Cassie saves herself.
