I was intrigued at first, but lost interest about 1/3 of the way through.
I only rated it 2 stars because it just wasn't my kind of book. I could and did connect with some things he said about being a minority in America. I wouldn't read again and probably won't go out of my way to recommend this book, but I am glad I read it. There was one quote that really spoke to me, especially considering this exact thing is happening in a neighborhood close to me; a non-latino coming into a predominately latino neighborhood saying she is opening up a better, "healthier", fruteria.
"Will you give credit where it's due or will you allow the media to prop you up as the next Marco Polo taking spices from the Barbarians Beyond the Wall and 'refining' them? The most infuriating thing is the idea that ethnic food isn't already good enough because it goddamn is. We were fine before you came to visit and we'll be fine after. If you like our food, great, but don't come tell me you're gonna clean it up, refine it, or elevate it because it's not necessary or possible. We don't need fucking food missionaries to cleanse our palates. What we need are opportunities outside kitchens and cubicles." (Page 248 of the e-book)

quick and fun read. liked his description of taipei night markets & how he fell in love with food the best.
I enjoyed this memoir enough. I appreciated the viewpoints and perspectives a lot because as a white person, I've grown up not having to deal with what many others in this country go through on a daily basis. I got sort of sick of all the weed stories after a while, but hey, it's a memoir...gotta tell it how it was.
I liked this book significantly more once I moved from reading to listening. You would be hard-pressed to find someone more different from me than Eddie Huang in his younger years, so hearing his words in my internal voice was too discordant. He reads the audiobook himself and it's a great performance. It still made me uncomfortable, but I think that was his intention. I didn't really like the book, but I'm definitely glad I read it.
This book was great fun, and made me hungry. Huang is witty, thoughtful, and comes across so genuine. His discussions of race, stories of childhood and young adulthood antics, and all the wonderful food descriptions make this a new favorite memoir.
I have wanted to read this memoir for a while and after watching the episodes of the show, I decided it was time to check this out and read!
The memoir gave me a better understanding of Eddie Huang, after seeing and reading interviews and following his show through VICE. Huang did not hold back on any part of his thoughts which I admired, he said what he wanted to say and took whatever came his way.
While reading there were some points that I was nodding along with, internally thinking YES! I agree as well as Oh, I want to know more about this. I learned and continue to want to know more as well.
One day I do want to go to New York and eat at BaoHaus but for now I will continue on watching the show, taking time to think and learn more about myself as an Asian-American.
