The Secret Life of Animals: What They Feel, How They Communicate – Discovering a Hidden World
Peter Wohlleben
I was such a huge fan of Wohlleben's The Hidden Life of Trees, I was hesitant to read this tome at first. Considering how thoroughly he brought trees' senses to life, I worried that TILOA would be as transformative. Would I be able to eat meat after reading it? Would I be able to put my dog behind a fence?
The Inner Life of Animals doesn't have the weight of Wohlleben's earlier work. It is really a collection of personal anecdotes about animals that Wohlleben has cared for, and how they demonstrate emotions and senses that some might ascribe only to humans.
Animal lovers will love this book. (I plan to buy it for my favorite animal-lover.) But it isn't as ground-breaking as his earlier book, which I selected as my favorite read of 2017.

overall, i really enjoyed this book. i love animals and just observing them in general.
i never gave a whole lot of thought into topics of whether they feel pain, fear, love, and empathy, and other human feelings, and this book did a great job in stirring those thoughts and giving me perspective.
it’s disheartening to think about how we treat animals, especially in the meat industry knowing that they feel fear and pain.
i felt enchanted by a lot of the anecdotes and research studies, and although i knew a decent amount of the topics in the book, i still learned new things.
i always like reading or watching documentaries about animals because i’m always curious on what is going on inside my dog’s head. and i’d like to better understand my best little companion.
i will say the author extrapolates a lot and definitely found stories and research that backed his narrative.

There is nothing new here for most people who keep up with animal science, but the author once again comes off as arrogant and preachy.
Not at all as captivating as his brilliant first work, The Inner Life of Trees.
A lot of conjecture and anecdotal evidence. A fun read, but now necessarily a convincing read.
I like the idea of this book. I wish the “evidence” was more scientific.
