i liked this book but it's probably not for everyone. i love how it's anecdotal and i think it speaks to how a lot of things are discovered in ecology. made me appreciate the world around me.

I really like this author. This is the third book I read by him the first two being about trees. He is equally adept at speaking on animal life as he is on trees. If you have not read his tree books then go ahead and go read those because he writes delightful tree books. He delves deep into the emotional lives of animals and includes many experiences from his own life working as a Forester and owning a variety of animals on a farm. He also incorporates many historical examples and modern-day recent research on animal emotions. He also compares animal emotions to our own and discusses the biological underpinnings of many of our common emotions both in reference to our own biology and that of animals. Quite a good book.

It's refreshing to have someone push back against the anti- anthropomorphism however i disagree with some observations that we're made. The truth is that we just don't know what animals feel and I personally believe it varies widely even among animals of the same species. I struggled to stay focused on this book hence the low rating

Took me a while to finish despite it being such a small book. A lot of reviewers wrote that there was no science behind his beliefs -they seem to have missed the point. He incorporated science/studies when they were available which underscored his entire point that there are limited studies pertaining to this subject matter. I enjoyed reading his hypothesis about animals but sometimes I did not follow his reasoning. But overall I adamantly agree with his belief that the human species need to be more kind to other species on this planet.
