To be fair if I had known this was YA before hand I wouldn’t have picked it up. That being said somebody get this girl some therapy for the deaths she’s caused and feels massive guilt over, and maybe slap around the adults telling her to get over it and stop feeling sorry for herself. Then maybe we can slap them again for telling her she’s useless if she can’t control her magic. I liked the magic system, and the world building, especially the parallels to our own environmental problems we are ignoring, and the inclusion of LGBTQ characters, but just couldn’t get past grown ass adults manipulating and emotionally abusing a deeply traumatized young adult. Sheesh. Also, this in not urban fantasy, (they are in the poconos for Pete’s sake), it’s contemporary fantasy.
