Compassion, like anything else, can be worn dull by rough use.

Oh dear. I wanted to enjoy this. There wasn’t hope for edification but rather an atmospheric exploration of the primordial and ineffable. That didn’t happen. Instead there’s a quintet of entitled Generation Z gathering at a creepy haunted Japanese mansion for a wedding with tales of terror. Pretty sure I don’t need to spell out the plot nor my dissatisfaction.

Absolutely loved The Salt Grows Heavy but this one just didn't work for me.  Couldn't keep up with all of the similes - it was a slog to get through them. Couldn't figure out everyone's relationships, motivations, etc. and they were all so unlikable that I didn't care about what happened to any of them. And then an unsatisfying ending. Two stars since some of the atmosphere was fun to read.

My 3 stars is like a 2.9 rounded up … i think this book would have thrived being longer!!!

This could have been so much better. I was so pumped for a horror novel structured around Japanese yokai but it was so lackluster. A very quick read but incredibly anticlimactic. Still love the cover though.
