Some beautiful prose but awful dialogue. Like truly awful. The main character actually says ti another character "speak to the hand". Other than children, who says that? In conversation?
Another "horror" book I've read recently which wasn't scary. Nor did it use horror tropes or structures to explore or critique anything. There was nothing there.
At least this was short and quick. I think it could have functioned better as a very short story with less dialogue.

This was a hard read for me. Not because of the genre or the descriptions, but due to the language. Being my first embarkment into Japanese culture. I didn't understand a lot of the terminologies and found myself pausing often to Google. The constant throw from the storyline caused by my confusion was off-putting to an extent. On top of being emerged into a culture, I didn't know or understand the author seemed to be trying to hard to sound more profound than was necessary. She almost comes off as pedantic, pompous, pretentious.
The cover is gorgeous. I believe it's my favorite part of the book. It has the look of nightmares and the promise of darkness.
Unfortunately, this is where my love for the book dies. The characters are underdeveloped. To many of them for so short a book. You can tell the author is trying. She gives them a lot of convoluted back story that, more often than not, drags instead of enhances. Everyone is everyone's ex, when this is supposed to be a wedding party. Not one of the characters is fleshed out enough to care for, even our MC Cat. I found all of them boring, flat, an all-around unlikable.
The plot held such promises. Within the walls of the haunted mission resides the ghost of a cast of bride waiting for her groom to arrive. Rotting and withering the reader expects so much more than is delivered.

This is one of the shortest books I’ve read/listened to in forever—only 3 hours on audio—but wow, it packs a punch! The atmosphere is spooky as hell, dripping with eerie, unsettling imagery that makes you feel like you’re trapped inside a ghost story.
While it didn’t scare me, the tension and dread were constant, and that ending? My jaw was on the floor. If you’re in the mood for a quick, chilling read that lingers in your mind, this one is worth picking up!
This book was fine, but reminded me of a cheesy horror film.
