This could have been 100 pages longer just to dive into the lore. But it was a good read for a spooky story.

2.5 stars? Not sure what happened or how I feel about it, but the cover is amazing so I’m going to pretend I enjoyed the story.

I wanted to start off this October with a horror and get the spooky vibes, but I have no spooky vibes, and I'm really just disappointed and a bit angry. Luckily this was a quick and short read, because I would have DNF-ed it if it was any longer.

It started off promisingly, but then it shattered completely about 20% in when all the characters started behaving like children on a school trip. I liked how in the beginning Khaw gave hints to the title, and I was trying to piece together the puzzle and what teeth had to do with everything. However, once we arrived at the reasoning for the title, there was really no suspence or intrigue left. I think if they had only left the reveal of the backstory a bit longer, maybe even to the end, then I would have given it a higher ranking.

Another thing I liked was the descriptions of the surroundings, and the presence of all senses. I found their descriptions of mouths and how the protagonist moved her tongue really interesting. It's not something I find writers using very often, but I think it worked well here. However, that was also before the 20% mark. Further into the book they started describing all of the characters showing their teeth like wolves, and this is just one of those physical things writers describe that makes no sense to me and it pulls me out of the story. People just don't behave that way. Is the author alluding to the characters being supernatural and wolf-like all of a sudden, or are they just saying that the characters normally show their teeth when they're angry? I don't know what they were trying to do there, but it gave me the ick and made me slightly mad at how often it happened.Another thing that made me clench all my muscles was how unoriginal and meta it was. I think meta writing can work, but it worked horribly in this instance. When the character calls himself the comic relief and then precedes to make jokes in every occasion ... it just provoked me a bit at how little effort seemed to go into it.

So, this ended up being one of my few 1 stars and that made me sad. Some people would probably love it, but it just did not work for me.

This should have been a “one sitting” book but I struggled so hard with it. Didn’t even want to pick it back up. Glad it was only 124 pages or it probably would have been a DNF. I couldn’t get past how bad the characters were. Too much bickering!

I was gonna give this 4 stars but then the ending was..... not as satisfying as I wanted it to be? But other than that I really enjoyed this tense, dark, eerie story. I'm a huge fan of anything with roots in Japan so this was a fun read!

Normally I don’t enjoy horror as it never really seems to scare me. This one was a little different. Short, but palpable. Not too detailed, but ambient. I thought the ending came abruptly, but it wasn’t horrible. I would have loved to know more about the house and the people that were there before the main characters showed up.
