Pros: the writing was very good. I appreciate the picture that was painted with her words and I feel like it’s so important to feel immersed in a book. The cover as well… super spooky and set the tone.

Cons: the language was confusing at times but that’s probably my own ignorance speaking. Also, I feel like the timing was weird. It was a gradual build up but more or less, the ending happened and it was just random and felt very jolting. It took me out of the story trying to figure out what was going on.

I found it slow and the writing pretentious. Very disappointing, because the premise sounded great.

Had high hopes for this book, and it did not really work out for me. Unfortunately I have an issue with books that are too detailed. I get lost in the details in a very confusing way. I also was expecting an entirely different ghost story, and it ended up being weird and cult-ish. I did like the Japanese/ Asian twists because representation matters! There were a lot of mythical creatures/ghosts from that culture. It was interesting getting myself exposed to that!

Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan-Tor/Forge for providing me an earc of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review

This was one of the scariest horror novels I have ever consumed! It was full of creepy twists and turns and wonderful writing that really put me in the same what-the-f**k-is-happening headspace that the characters seemed to be in most of the time. I do not know anything about Japanese folklore yet I still found this book easy to read and understand. It made me curious about a lot of the lore but no research was required to find this amazing novella creepy and terrifying.

I also really liked the group of protaganists. That early to mid 20s age range isn't too common in stories, I find, and the way they all fit together--high school friends, former lovers, friends of friends--made for a really interesting group to be stuck in a haunted house together.

I would recommend this to older teens and adults who are looking for something bone chilling and a little different

Not feeling the writing style or liking the characters.

I absolutely hate when characters in horror stories are self aware, it drives me absolutely crazy and is an immediate turn off. two of the five characters are obnoxiously self aware, and one of the two is such a douche bag who over uses “fuck.” The horror was weak, and the folklore in the story was barely any better. Overall, disappointing, but bearable only because of its short length.
