Some good lines in this one but the story itself is boring and borderline nonsensical. I get freaked out very easily but this made no impression. But of all the books I've read, this one having the lowest rating seems harsh. Oh well. What do you expect when my library's book challenge asks me to read a book rated less than 3 stars?

Not a fan. Which makes me really scared that I won’t like her other book The Salt Grows Heavy and that one I actually own….

It just wasn’t scary for being a haunted house / ghost story. I don’t think the ghost would scare my 8 year old daughter. The ending was good though.

This book did not work on so many levels for me. The group of 20 something besties whose banal shenanigans make up the plot felt completely out of place in the ancient, sacred setting.

The overly elaborate and wordy style of describing locations and motivations actually made it harder to enjoy and distracted from feeling emerged in the plot or any suspense.

She does an excellent job of setting mood and describing gore/viscera. Unfortunately, I hated all the characters to the point I didn't care if they died or not.

I actually really liked this one. Creepy and a little gory and it was a nice change of scenery to add in the Japanese folklore! Good and quick horror read!

this loss my interest as it went on, and that’s saying something cause it didn’t have much interest in the first place. i’m glad it was short, and that’s probably what lead to me finishing it. the characters are lowkey awful people. i read and rate books based on how fun they are to read and this…wasn’t really fun. it was kinda creeping up to being fun, but its just like…i really did not like almost all of the characters.  the subtle (was it subtle?) fourth wall breaking felt so…random? this just wasn’t for me.

I absolutely loved this book; its short and sweet, and the prose is gorgeous. A fair warning that if you don’t like prose, you will hate this book; its largely prose to the point of poetry. I will say this is the kind of thing I’d like to pick apart in an English class.

I’m so split on this book, I wanted more and less at the same time. I didn’t love its almost fourth wall breaking when discussing horror movie tropes as it made the whole story seem trivial. I loved the concept and premise so much, but it just fell flat for me, especially the hype I had seen it get for being incredibly scary. It was like a mediocre slasher film, a bit grotesque but not enough to make you feel any terror, and just a bit too whimsical for me to really get into it.
