Meh. Pacing was not good, story felt a little out there. References to Japanese culture were cool, but I had not enough frame of reference to actually imagine any of the creatures. Style became repetitive fairly quickly and this was violently heterosexual. Yes, despite the main character being bi.

This story definitely has a good base but for me it was hard to get invested in it since I had a hard time keeping the characters straight [pretty much all description of them is based on who has previously slept with whom and I just do not care even a bit] so it ended up being pretty middle of the road for me personally but if you have more patience for people's relationship drama then you'll probably find it more compelling. As mentioned in some other reviews there are a lot of random Japanese words and phrases that are never defined but I think if you had an anime phase at any point you can probably get through it without looking too many things up.

this book has one of the most compelling covers i've seen in a long time, but the story was incredibly bland. it wasn’t scary, the characters were whiny and unlikeable, and it read like a silly teen movie.

I keep flopping between rating this 2 or 3 starts and I can't decide which one to stick with. I enjoyed it, it was spooky and a cool setting and classic "this is wrong." feeling, but for some reason I'm hesitant to give it more than 3. Maybe it's because it was only around 100 pages and I'm used to having longer to get adjusted to characters? I'm not sure! I still enjoyed it and will be keeping it, it's just not currently a fav.

Gave me nightmares even though it is kinda predictable. I loved the setting in this ancient Japanese house and the horror elements, but the set-up for the story did not really convince. Did they really believe that sleeping in the most haunted house ever TM would be a good ideas and they'd stay safe... Well. But well written, suspenseful, atmospheric, delightfully creepy and queer, enjoyable.

4 stars

The story was dull. Nothing of interest happened until halfway through the book. The dialog was poorly written, and the characters' interactions were awkward. Like, these people did not need to be friends. I gave it two stars because I feel bad for leaving just one.
