HMM. This book was a lot better than the Paper Magician trilogy. The main character was more likable, and there's nothing problematic about the romantic relationship, since both characters are closer in age and peers in their field when they meet. I could have used a lot more characterization, since these characters are about as deep as "I'm clumsy and I don't like to wear skirts" and "I'm nervous about taking my Magicianship test". Still, for light reading, it's a fun romp with an interesting world and a cool magic system. I do really like the focus on how the magic of this world can help advance the medical field, since developing a prosthetic arm is a big part of the plot. I can't speak to how well the author represents the amputee community, though.

Everything is altogether too wholesome--you can still very much tell that it's written by an author with certain family values. But that's a personal preference thing, and the climax of the book is action-packed and tense all the same.

I still can't recommend this author to people because of the content of her other books, but I don't regret spending a couple days reading this one.
